Ships broadcasting AIS across the Gulf, plotted live. 175 of 1527 moved between two position reports in the past hour; 931 sit anchored or waiting, and 417 more were last heard from over an hour ago; 4 more were first seen or are back after a feed gap, so we can't say yet whether they are moving. The page checks for new data every 60 seconds, but positions update about every 20 minutes.
Positions come from vessels self-reporting over AIS, indexed inside a Persian Gulf bounding box (22 to 28 degrees north, 54 to 60 degrees east). Shore receivers hear the UAE and Oman side best, and fixes in the strait itself and off Iran are often hours old; they stop reaching east of about 57.4 degrees, so the Gulf of Oman side of the frame reads empty whether or not ships are sitting there. Under-way vessels carry the pulse ring; anchored and waiting ships sit dimmer, as do first sightings and ships back after a feed gap. A hollow ring is a vessel the receivers have not heard from in over an hour, drawn where it last reported. In a closure the standstill, ships waiting rather than crossing, is the story. This is an illustrative schematic, not a navigational chart. The military count is a minimum: warships often sail with AIS off.
