Ships broadcasting AIS across the Gulf, plotted live. 126 of 1456 are not holding position right now; the rest sit anchored or waiting. The map refreshes every 60 seconds.
Positions come from vessels self-reporting over AIS, indexed inside a Persian Gulf bounding box (22 to 28 degrees north, 54 to 60 degrees east). Shore receivers cover the western Gulf and the strait itself; they stop reaching east of about 57.4 degrees, so the Gulf of Oman side of the frame reads empty whether or not ships are sitting there. Under-way vessels carry the pulse ring; anchored and waiting ships sit dimmer. In a closure the standstill, ships waiting rather than crossing, is the story. This is an illustrative schematic, not a navigational chart.
